If you're looking to advance your career to a management or leadership position, you'll need finance and business skills. So, you may consider getting a management degree.

If so, then strongly consider the University of Tennessee Physician Executive MBA Program, offered by the Haslam College of Business, because it is a fantastic program.

The UT PEMBA is the longest running, and most highly respected physician-only MBA in the country, with over 650 graduates. Unlike other programs, this program only takes a year to complete. Today's Affirmation

“I am consistent. I always follow through on my commitments to myself and to others.”

Reflections

Can you believe it? – This is my 100th episode! It’s been an interesting journey. I’m not sure I expected to make it here when I started the podcast almost 2 years ago.

However, I surely feel a measure of success, reaching this milestone.

To what do I owe that success? Primarily to the commitment I made after the first month or so, that I was going to produce at least one episode per week. I’ve found that in any endeavor, especially a business, CONSISTENCY is key.

Like learning a new skill, or starting a business, you must show up consistently. Imagine starting a medical practice in which the hours are not set, and you sometimes show up late or leave early. That practice will struggle. It's the same with any endeavor.

Podcast Interviews Are Like Networking on Steroids

I’ve met a lot of interesting people along the way, including inspirational guests, and wonderful colleagues in the “online universe.” Too many to thank individually, although many have been guests as well as colleagues.

For today’s celebration, I’ve decided to present updates from some of the guests I interviewed during the first year of the podcast.

Hence, we'll hear about ongoing work and future plans from:

  • Mike Woo-Ming, MD, MPH
  • Mandy Armitage, MD
  • Charmaine Gregory, MD, FACEP
  • Sylvie Stacy, MD, MPH
  • Tom Davis, MD, FAAFP
  • Sue Zimmermann, MD
  • Savi Chadha, MD, MPH
  • Peter Steinberg, MD
  • Emma Hitt Nichols, PhD

Each guest provides encouragement, an update on their careers, and excellent advice.

You Miss 100% of the Shots You Don't Take

Wayne Gretzky (Quoted by Savi Chadha)

And as I listened to what they shared and the new things they’re doing, I realized several things.

Realizations

First, all of the guests and colleagues I’ve met while creating these 100 shows are awesome. Awesome for their courage, for their commitment, and for their generosity, both to me and to you. They have helped us by taking the time to share their stories and give their advice.

Many have continued to help you, long after our interview was posted, by connecting via email, LinkedIn or in other ways.

In fact, you know what’s really cool? When a guest tells me that a listener has reached out and the two of them have collaborated in some manner. Then I feel that I’ve really made a difference.

I’ve learned that physicians have the same doubts and limiting beliefs as anyone else. But they work hard to overcome those doubts, because they care about their families, their communities, and the medical profession.

And they generally find new ways to help patients, if not directly through traditional medical practice, then indirectly via their new nonclinical career or side gig.

I also realized that I love my guests.

They’re really GOOD people. Like I said – generous and committed. It’s been fun working with them, chatting before and after our interviews, personally tapping into their wisdom, and sending listeners to them for coaching and mentoring.

Special Thanks

I said I wasn’t going to list everyone I want to thank, but on the short list who have been very supportive, THANK YOU to Heather, Dave, Michelle, Tom, Mike, Maiysha, Jesse, George, Lynn Marie, Sylvie and Laura (from our Facebook group).

And, MOST IMPORTANT, let me thank each of YOU – for listening, sharing the podcast, providing reviews and ratings, and sending me feedback and encouragement. I hope I’ve made a difference.

However, I’m just getting started. I’ve got a lot more ideas to support you on your quest for a meaningful new career over the coming months. So, stay tuned!

My Current Resources

At the opening of the episode, I list all of the resources that I currently offer. These are all designed to accelerate your career pivot. Here is the current list:

  • I have a FREE guide that describes how to pursue a nonclinical career in the hospital setting called “How to Land Three Popular Hospital Management Jobs.” This can be found by going to vitalpe.net/3hospitaljobs.
  • I still have my first FREE mini-guide called “5 Nonclinical Careers You Can Pursue Today” which can be accessed at vitalpe.net/freeguide.
  • I also put together a quick video that walks you through the process of creating a LinkedIn profile. It’s pretty basic and designed for those who have never completed their profile. It can be found at vitalpe.net/linkedinvideo.
  • For those that don’t always have time to listen to a full podcast episode, I generally create a transcript that you can access using the bright blue button in the middle of the show notes for each episode.
  • I’ve opened a mini-membership site at Patreon.com/pncpodcast. It's still in its early stages. I’m focusing on the Bonus Level where you can sign up and start engaging with me on a monthly Office Hours Zoom call, where I also plan to bring on guests. Since payments only occur on the first of each month, if you sign up on August 2nd, you’ll have several weeks to try it out before your first payment occurs – so you can cancel if you change your mind at no charge.
  • Finally, I have already produced three courses for you on my Nonclinical Career Academy. One of them is a free mini-course about becoming a medical science liaison. The other 2 are paid courses. You can find those at vitalpe.net/nonclinicalcareeracademy.
